Sometimes they can be good, but most of the time they can be very bad.  Mostly because they're either overpowered Mary Sues, self-inserts, they just don't fit in the setting of the series they're supposed to be in, or they use an already established character as a base.  These are things you do not do when creating a character.

Examples of these are usually found in really popular fandoms like Naruto and Bleach.  I'm pretty sure anyone and everyone who likes those series have come across the Mary Sue fan characters Matsuri Uchiha and Marise Asahina at some point or another.  What's worse is that these characters popular for no reason.  How could these fan characters be so popular to the point that there are fangroups for them for absolutely no reason?  Then again, we do live in a world where One Direction, Twilight, Fairy Tail, and My Little Pony are popular, so the standards are very low when it comes to knowing what's really good.

Then there's this one character in the Spider-Man fandom who is basically Danny Phantom wearing a Spider-Man shirt and a leather jacket.  What the fuck?

I just get tired of seeing these bad fan characters in my inbox on a daily basis.  I don't join groups for people's fan characters.  I join the groups for fan art of actual canon characters, damn it!

What are you lot's opinions on the matter of fan characters?

Well yeah, there are some folks who're too lazy to even create their characters from scratch; they just take whatever pic they can find and make it their own by tracing it. I don't like those kind of characters either.

As for the fanclubs, I believe the only reason why they do this is because they seek popularity which I don't understand why. It seems like it's an all out competition on who can gain the most fans.

Depending on how the characters are designed, I don't have a problem with OCs; just like you said there is a limit.

I have a three OCs that are invented due to me being such a huge fan of the series (Naruto, Soul Eater, and Katekyo Hitman Reborn*coughssoonaonoexorcistcough*). I make sure that each of my characters have a good story line so they can fit into the story (in fanfic world). I don't create fan groups of my characters because I don't want all of the attention and I love my characters so much that my characters don't even need a fan base :icondatassplz: If people like my characters, that's great, if not, oh well.

Overall, whether we like it or not, it's their characters. Let them do what they want. As some will say, "If you don't like it, then just ignore it"
