After a long wait due to what was mentioned in my last journal entry, I finally got my hands on Skyward Sword.  It is amazing for the most part, but I kinda wish they had it where you can select the type of controls you want to use.  Using the motion controls to be able to use the sword seems clunky at times.  Other than that, everything else is awesome.

Anyway, I recently found out that SS is supposed to be a prequel to Ocarina of Time and that got me thinking about something I'm sure everyone has been thinking for years.  What is the exact timeline of the Zelda series?  Finding what I could, thanks to Zeldapedia, I apparently found that the games don't exactly share the same timeline and it's possible that there are alternate universes within the series.

Starting with the first game, the following timeline goes as such:

The Legend of Zelda --> The Adventure of Link

The next separate timeline goes:

Skyward Sword --> Ocarina of Time --> A Link to the Past --> Link's Awakening

And even then, that timeline is branched off depending on what happens in OoT.

Ocarina of Time (Child Timeline) --> Majora's Mask --> Twilight Princess

Ocarina of Time (Adult Timeline) --> Wind Waker --> Phantom Hourglass --> Spirit Tracks

From what I gather about that, since in OoT defeating Ganondorf reverts everything back to normal and Link is sent back to his child form where he then sets off to find Navi and soon going up against Majora's Mask, it is quite possible that the only way for WW to happen is if Link were to have failed at defeating Ganondorf, thus making Toon Link's world a "what if" scenario.

Next separate timeline:

Oracle of Ages <--> Oracle of Seasons

The last timeline contains the other Toon Link games that are separate from the others:

The Minish Cap --> Four Swords --> Four Swords Adventure

I'm starting to see why there is no official confirmation on the timeline as this can get very confusing.

I was under the impression that at the end of OoT, Link went back to his childhood, ended up searching for Navi (Majora's Mask), and went forward to explore new lands (Oracle of Ages/Seasons, etc). He must have eventually returned home, because of his role as the wolf ghost/mentor in Twilight Princess... (wasn't he in the process of returning to Hyrule to save Zelda when his ship wrecked in Link's Awakening?)

I think you're right though, Wind Waker seems to be an alternate "what if" version in case Link ever failed to stop Ganon. (Or in case he was off saving some other world at the time).

Maybe there is an official storyline all set out, but I have a hard time believing that the early games are a part of it. I doubt they had planned it all out back then. Maybe it only applies to the newer games?

Interesting topic to think about. :)
